When You Want to Offer Comfort, But Words Fail You--Try This Book

I recently read a tragic saying: no one will understand your grief. And while that is, in a way, hurtful to hear, I think it's very true. Even if you are grieving for the same person, no one quite feels that pain in the same way as you.

And everyone has grief. Whether it's the loss of a loved one or the death of a dream, pain happens regularly in life.

The Book of Comforts is a book I never knew I needed.

What makes this book different--and good?

1. This is written by people who know grief. One of the authors, Kaitlin Wernet, lost her little brother in 2014 and says she "became pretty aware of the grief books I didn't like." When reading this book, you know it's written from the heart.

2. What makes this book comforting and genuine is the fact that it's Biblical encouragement.  I can say all I want to comfort my loved ones, but no one except God can do it perfectly. Pointing those who are hurting in your life to Him is one of the best things you can do.

3. It's a beautiful book. I wouldn't have expected a book regarding grief to be beautiful, but I expect that the attractive photography lifts spirits and brings a reminder of hope. With a roster like this, I expected great design - and this book doesn't disappoint.

The Book of Comforts is divided into 5 sections:
  • Comfort in God Alone
  • Comfort in Praise
  • Comfort in Dark Places
  • Comfort in Restoration
  • Comfort in Truth
89 devotional-style readings from the authors are paired with uplifting Bible verses. Some devotions are a paragraph, and some are a few pages. All of them are poignant. Beautiful lettering calls out reassuring Biblical promises on pages in between alongside photographs.

When you want to comfort your friend, but words fail you--this is the book. When you are at the end of your rope and need Jesus but don't know where to look--try this book.
