A Worthy Pursuit - A Dime-Novel Adventure

Karen Witemeyer is definitely one of my favorite authors in the historical fiction genre (Full Steam Ahead, Stealing the Preacher). Her characters seem to have the perfect balance of humor and realness and the hi-jinks they get themselves into are always a lot of fun.

A Worthy Pursuit follows the same lines--a good-hearted schoolmarm has "kidnapped" three of her pupils (for good reason) and heavy-duty Stone Hammond, a "tracker," needs to get them back.

I found this story to be a little less like Witemeyer's other novels in that it was more serious. There is a lot less humor and more scary, serious situations. Her hero is rock-solid and her heroine is steady and graceful. It departs from her past characters, where at least one of them seems to be bungling things up. In that way, it wasn't exactly what I was expecting, but it was a great story nonetheless.

If you are looking for a romantic adventure story--like an old dime western--pick up A Worthy Pursuit. But don't expect it to be another Short-Straw Bride.
