Where Courage Calls - Book Review

This winter, I've been reading through Janette Oke's Canadian West series, and Where Courage Calls was the perfect, satisfying read to add to the list, written by both Janette Oke and her daughter, Laurel Oke Logan.

The plotline echoes the earlier books in the series. Beth Thatcher (whose Aunt Elizabeth is the heroine in earlier novels) ventures away from her family and friends to the exciting, rugged world of western Canada. She becomes a teacher in Coal Valley, an aptly named mining town that is full of poverty, loneliness, and death. Beth, obviously, has to readjust, but God guides her along, with the help of some fantastic friends and mentors (including Molly, her confidante and landlady, and two Mounties).

Though similar to the earlier books in the series, I really enjoyed the new setting, new adventures, and great characters. You never know what is in store for Beth or how the challenges will work out. You grow to love Coal Valley as much as Beth does. I found myself inspired by Beth's story and wondering where God could be leading me.

Janette Oke is a classic novelist, and as someone who thoroughly enjoys her tales, I recommend adding Where Courage Calls to your shelf.
