Great Author, Awesome Series - Harvest of Gold by Tessa Afshar

After reading Harvest of Rubies (also by Tessa Afshar), I could barely wait to get Harvest of Gold into my hands. This sequel continues Darius and Sarah's journey as a couple and Nehemiah's quest to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.

Again, this book was fantastic. Like the first book in the series, I absolutely could not stop reading. There were a few things I really liked about this book that set it apart from other historical fiction.

First, this book is all about God. Rarely do I come across a romance story that involves God as they key player and the only way to a restored relationship. In this book, I hungered for the main characters to find God and let Him direct their paths. I appreciated how Afshar centered this book on God; she didn't add Bible verses as a sidenote to the story or mention it here and there--God came first in every respect and was deeply involved in this story (as it is in real life).

Second, I liked how she maintained historical accuracy. I looked up Nehemiah after reading this book, and Afshar quoted parts of the Bible word-for-word. By using true historical data as a basis for this book, it was not only more believable, but it made the original, Biblical aspects of the story even more real to me.

Third, I can't forget how much I enjoyed the action in this book. It never lost pace or got boring for me; there was always a new twist or an aspect of the plot that I was dying to resolve. Afshar is a talented writer, and this book attests to her strong writing history.

In all, I highly recommend reading this book if you enjoy Biblical or historical fiction. I would recommend starting with Harvest of Rubies and then reading this novel.
