Booksneeze Review: A Year with Jesus by R.P. Nettelhorst

Nettelhorst's A Year with Jesus is an excellent way to spend time with your Maker. This devotional offers 365 lessons, each beginning with a Bible passage featuring Jesus at the forefront and then a section of application and explanation of the passage.

A couple aspects of this devotional I liked: first, I thought the length of the passages were perfect. Sometimes, if a devotional only gives one verse or a reference, parts of the reading can be lost depending on what version of the verse one is reading, and sometimes the reader doesn't even look up the verse. In this devotional, the verse is a huge part of the lesson, and so putting it right there on the page forces the reader to examine it and allows for easy reference when reading the application part of the devotion. I also liked how the year wasn't numbered by date but by day. Sometimes, when doing a year-long devotional, I would forget a day and skip it altogether, or start it midway through the year and lose all the dates before the day I started the devotion. This one simply has numbers (ex., Day 50) so if you miss a day or don't start in January, it's okay.

On the other hand, I would have liked a bit more from this devotional. I think because of the length of the verse, there isn't a lot of room for the discussion and so some things I really appreciate in other devotionals are missing from this one. It doesn't have a prayer at the end of the "day" (or even prayer suggestions) and it also is missing any application questions.

In all, though, I think this book is a worthwhile devotion; it has good lessons and its premise of every day with Jesus is excellent. I would recommend giving it a try if you're looking for a new devotion in the coming year, or any time!
